Top Considerations When Installing Awnings

I live in a house with very little outdoor space, but I still wanted to grow some of my own food, so I started a container garden on my patio a few years ago. The first year was a steep learning curve with a lot of trial and error, but I've learned a lot about growing vegetables in containers and believe it's a valuable skill for everyone to have. I started this blog to share what I've learned and provide tips for making the most of the outdoor space you have. You'll find posts on a range of topics, such as the nutrients required for healthy vegetable plants, how to prepare your soil, companion planting for natural bug control and succession planting to grow more vegetables in the space you have available. I hope you enjoy my blog.

Top Considerations When Installing Awnings

Outdoor awnings provide shade and are a beautiful addition to any property. When squeezed up for space, you should consider shelters that allow people to lounge, dine and wine outside. Despite their usefulness, most people are unaware of what to prioritise when buying awning. Here are a few essential aspects to consider when shopping for awnings.

Fixed or Retractable Awnings

Based on the current realities and needs, you can either choose a fixed or retractable awning. An awning's usefulness is derived by shielding people from the elements. In most instances, however, the weather is erratic and keeps changing. A motorised awning affords you added convenience since it can either be stretched out or retracted based on the current weather condition. Some shelters are even equipped with sensors to operate automatically in response to changing weather patterns. Unfortunately, fixed awnings are not detachable, and thus, cannot be deployed or retracted as you wish. Therefore, consider your preference before investing in a canopy.

Angle

The location of an awning has a direct bearing on performance. Unfortunately, the angle of installation is usually an afterthought for many people, although it affects the performance of a canopy. Notably, no one wants to install an awning only for the shade to fail in shielding users from the elements. For example, as a general rule, the shade of a properly installed awning should provide at least 65% coverage around a window. The provision can be lower, but it should not go below 45% since less sunlight coverage is required at certain times of the day depending on the orientation of your windows. The angles ensure that users are fully protected and able to enjoy the breathtaking view around your property.

Fabric

Perhaps one of the most important considerations when installing awnings is the choice of fabric since it determines the level of protection users get from bad weather. In most instances, awnings are designed to protect users from sunlight and rain, which are known to dampen the mood when people are having a good time. Therefore, a canopy should sturdy and water-resistant to protect revellers from direct UV rays and rain. Equally, the fabrics should be fire retardant to eliminate any chances of an awning catching fire. If you go for a low-quality canopy material, extreme sunlight rays might penetrate and reduce comfort levels. For optimum results, consult a service provider for guidance on the best fabric since different areas have various requirements due to changing weather patterns.
